REMOTE WELD INSPECTION AND QUALITY CONTROL WITH AI-POWERED VISION

Case Study Gortani Srl: safety, control, and innovation – the artificial vision solution for remote weld inspection developed with Eye-Tech

In the production of machinery for winemaking, precision in operations and operator safety are paramount. Among the most critical activities is visual inspection of welds, a process traditionally carried out close to the machine during assembly and production phases.

Gortani Srl, a company based in Amaro, Friuli, specializing in advanced technologies for viticulture, faced a clear need: monitor the quality of welds while minimizing operator exposure to potential risks and ensuring both operational continuity and high-quality standards.

For this reason, a collaboration was initiated with our company, Eye-Tech Srl, with the aim of finding a concrete, scalable solution immediately applicable to the production environment. The project started from the operational needs expressed by Gortani and evolved through a gradual process of analysis, experimentation, and prototyping, leading to the development of a fully functional system tested directly in an industrial setting.

The Challenge

The initial objective was clear: to create a vision system that would enable remote monitoring of the operator during welding, improving both safety and process reliability.

However, during development, the potential of the solution became evident: the system could not only transmit real-time images but could also become an intelligent tool capable of supporting automatic quality control.

Technological Solution

The first phase of the project led to the creation of a system composed of:

  • Industrial cameras resistant to the operational conditions of the welding area
  • Low-latency video streaming to a remote workstation
  • Advanced visualization software with interactive controls
  • Management of light sources and optical filters to optimize weld visibility

This prototype made it possible to continuously observe operations without the physical presence of the operator near the machine.

Evolution: quality assisted by artificial intelligence

Building on the success achieved with remote monitoring, the project was extended to include an automatic AI-based analysis component.
The solution now integrates:

  • Video detection and segmentation algorithms
  • Automatic analysis of weld characteristics (shape, continuity, uniformity)
  • Real-time anomaly detection and classification
  • Dashboard for data recording and historical tracking

Thanks to artificial intelligence, the system no longer simply shows what is happening: it interprets it, measures it, and transforms it into actionable information for immediate decision-making.

The role of IP4FVG and Area Science Park

The project was initiated and funded as part of the second edition of the “Test4Digitalization” program, promoted by IP4FVG with the support of Area Science Park, through FSC Friuli Venezia Giulia funds.

Their contribution accelerated technological validation and the transition from the prototype phase to applied experimentation in a real industrial context.

The collaboration between Gortani and Eye-Tech demonstrates how the integration of artificial vision, AI, and production processes can transform a single operational need into a new standard of safety, efficiency, and industrial quality.
