For several years now, in modern agriculture<\/strong>, various innovative technologies<\/strong> have been used to automate work processes<\/strong> that were previously managed manually. Automatic steering tractors<\/strong>, intelligent seeding systems<\/strong>, and software for agronomic management<\/strong> are just examples of smart applications<\/strong> for sustainable and precision agriculture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Even artificial intelligence<\/strong>, particularly computer vision<\/strong>, plays a fundamental role in the concept of Agriculture 4.0<\/strong>. Analysis of aerial images<\/strong> acquired through drones<\/strong> is an excellent tool to understand various types of issues<\/strong>, allowing for rapid strategic interventions<\/strong> in the area with significant advantages<\/strong> in terms of both costs<\/strong> and environmental sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For these types of analyses, various techniques and a multitude of video sensors can be used. The most commonly used video sensors are certainly multispectral cameras<\/strong>, used in agronomy for creating vigor maps<\/strong> and recognizing water stress<\/strong> or specific diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In detail, multispectral cameras<\/strong> are characterized by capturing images with a number of electromagnetic bands generally ranging from 3 to 10. The most common ones, color cameras, capture the three visible spectrum bands<\/strong> corresponding to the colors red<\/strong>, green<\/strong>, and blue<\/strong>, in addition to the near-infrared (NIR)<\/strong> band. The values \u200b\u200bcaptured are then evaluated using the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)<\/strong>, an excellent indicator to analyze the well-being of various crops<\/strong> such as vineyards or general farmland.<\/p>\n

As easily understood from the graph in the following figure, high reflectance in the near-infrared band<\/strong> indicates a healthier state of the crop<\/strong>, while combinations of different wavelengths allow identifying potential anomalies<\/strong> such as differences in growth<\/strong> or emerging issues within the plot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All these assessments also aim to generate prescription maps<\/strong> for variable-rate application of fertilizers<\/strong>, save agronomic inputs<\/strong> through variable and targeted use<\/strong> in the plot, and reduce environmental impact on the soil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
